I appreciate the vast life experiences seniors bring to meetings. Seniors have experienced so much in their lives. I believe this gives them a wonderful perspective on life that also helps me examine my own beliefs about what is important in my life.
I believe online therapy provides seniors with greater access to therapy services. Seniors with physical limitations and transportation concerns can take part in therapy sessions in the comfort of their home. It can be more convenient for seniors to attend therapy appointments at home – particularly for seniors who may live many miles from a therapist. Some seniors may prefer online therapy in their home because it can feel more comfortable compared to talking about mental health concerns in an office setting.
I have been practicing as a licensed psychologist since 2002. I have worked primarily in correctional settings throughout my career and have treatment experience working in college counseling centers, other social service settings, and the online BetterHelp platform. I have experience treating a variety of concerns in individual therapy that include depression, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, anger, substance use, addictions, relationship concerns, trauma, grief, coping with life changes, and personality disorders. I also have experience working with couples on relationship and communication related concerns. In addition, I have over 1800 hours of group therapy experience with clients in different treatment settings and on different topics.
One approach I use is Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy or “REBT.” This approach is a type of Cognitive Behavior Therapy that identifies and works on changing irrational beliefs and negative thought patterns that can lead to emotional and behavioral problems for the client. I also use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (“ACT”) and mindfulness strategies to help clients accept and work through distressing thoughts and feelings. In addition, I embrace a Client-Centered Therapy approach, as I believe clients are the experts of their lives and have their own unique strengths and resources to overcome life challenges. I see the client and myself as a “team” working together to help the client feel better with an increased sense of well-being.
