While I have worked with a wide variety of ages throughout my career, I have found that I especially enjoy working with seniors. I feel wholeheartedly that the life experiences seniors have had creates growth, wisdom and perspective that are not often present in other age groups. Yet, despite the many strengths that seniors embody, life challenges can arise. Thus, building a strong relationship and honoring these lived experiences and traits in order to create change can be an extremely effective part of the therapy process.

Online therapy (or phone therapy) can be as effective of a mode of therapy as in-person sessions. This form of therapy allows individuals to remain at home, but still be able to access needed services. It removes some of the barriers to seeking help, including difficulty with transportation, mobility issues, as well as the additional time needed to go to in-person sessions. Some people may also feel more comfortable sharing their personal experiences within the confines of their home, rather than in an office setting.

In the settings mentioned above, I have worked with seniors on presenting concerns such as symptoms of depression and anxiety, grief and loss, as well as chronic pain/health concerns, to name just a few.

I believe that therapy is a collaboration and that you are the “expert” on your experiences. By listening and better understanding your concerns/challenges during the sessions, I can then use my skills, education, and experience to help address the presenting difficulties using a number of evidence-based approaches. In addition, mutual respect, understanding, and creating a space where you are valued and heard is also an important part of the therapeutic relationship, and one I strive to create in my practice.
