I love hearing about the experiences of older adults and listening to their stories. I believe the stories people tell are meaningful and can provide a roadmap to insight, change, and growth when spoken aloud to an empathetic listener. I have found that there is no group of people more motivated and hardworking in therapy than older adults!
Online therapy is incredibly beneficial for older adults because it is easily accessible and offers great flexibility. Whether you are active and busy in your careers or in retirement, or have limited access to in-person therapy due to location or physical reasons, online therapy can meet you where you’re at without any hassle.
I approach therapy as a cooperative process between the therapist and the client, in which the goal is to create meaningful change in the client’s life. Regardless of the topic – grief and loss, anxiety or depression, or struggling with a life change – I approach the client with empathy, an open mind, and a willingness to teach as well as learn. I often tell clients that I might be the expert on therapy in the room, but they are the experts on their own lives.
Whatever you are feeling ahead of starting therapy – nervousness, excitement, hesitation, relief – is absolutely normal, and all of it is welcome in the therapy room! There is no such thing as being “good” or “bad” at therapy; all that matters is that you show up as your authentic self.
