With the aging population, the need for senior care is increasing. Working with older adults provides valuable professional and personal growth opportunities. Knowing that provided care can have a significant impact on someone’s quality of life can be deeply rewarding and fulfilling work.

Research studies suggest that live online therapy using Zoom is just as effective and safe as in-person psychotherapy. While online therapy can be used for a variety of mental health conditions, the most of the existing research on online therapy focuses on its usefulness for conditions like anxiety and depression, especially with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a popular type of psychotherapy often used for anxiety and depression. Online therapy has some significant advantages, like convenience and flexibility. However, it has few pitfalls, like dealing with internet connection or finding a private place to hold the session.

As a licensed clinical psychologist and a marriage and family therapist, I have been providing assessment and treatment for older adults, couples, and families for over 30+ years.

In general, I use SAIL psychotherapy approach, as I am concerned about patient’s physical and mental health starting with:

1. Safety- nonviolent, nurturing environment based upon beliefs, feelings, and methods protective in nature.

2. Affect Regulation- valuing respect for self, others, and fostering therapeutic communication, healthy relationships while using effective regulation skills.

3. Integration of the whole – integrating physical, psychological, social, intellectual, spiritual strengths with the goals focused on advancement along healthy paths patients opt to take while emphasizing values such as faith, hope, integrity, relationships, respect, safety, stewardship.

4. Living Learning Environment- discovering patient’s role in the community where they live and/or work while looking at every interaction as an opportunity for learning, practicing, and incorporating newly learned skills and behaviors. Damage to the body, mind, and/or soul experienced by many that I see requires treatment that addresses all those domains, sometimes simultaneously and sometimes sequentially, through the united and integrated mix of individual, family, couple, and medical approaches and interventions provided by myself or other providers.
