Psychosis

Colleen Brenner is a therapist who values the life experience and perspectives of older adults, appreciating the stories and wisdom they bring. She believes online therapy is a valuable option for those who face barriers to in-person care, such as distance, mobility issues, or a preference for privacy.

Her approach is rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), focusing on collaborative goal-setting and progress between sessions without overwhelming clients with homework. She views clients as the experts on their own lives and approaches therapy with curiosity, support, and a strengths-based perspective.

Originally a researcher in academia with grants and publications, Colleen shifted to therapy later in life, inspired by her own experiences, evolving patience, and a desire for personal connection. She encourages new clients to move at a pace that feels right to them, emphasizing that therapy is not about advice-giving but about guiding clients on their own journey.

Outside of work, she enjoys traveling (including seven years living in Canada), working out, walking her dogs, and spending time with family.

Online therapy is a great way to connect with people who are far away from mental health services or have difficulty traveling to an in-person appointment. It is also great for those with mobility issues, or those who would just feel more comfortable discussing their life in the privacy of their own home.

I approach therapy sessions with open curiosity. YOU are the expert on you, and I’m here to listen, to remind you of your strengths and to provide tools that will help you work through difficulties.

I typically work from a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, where you will set goals and we’ll collaborate to work toward those goals each week. Since therapy is typically only one hour per week, it’s very helpful for clients to complete tasks in between therapy sessions. But don’t worry – I won’t bog you down with “homework”!

My advice to someone starting therapy for the first time is to go at your own pace. Yes, therapy is meant to help you try new approaches and break old patterns, but none of that needs to be done immediately. Take your time and go at the pace that feels comfortable for you.
