What I like most about working with older adults is the chance to support them in navigating complex emotional, social, and practical challenges with dignity and respect. Their resilience and life experience often bring a unique perspective, and I find it incredibly meaningful to advocate for their needs and empower them to continue to build their sense of self and identify acuired strengths. It’s a privilege to build trust and make a positive impact in their life.
Online therapy is effective for older adults as it increases accessibility. It allows them to access care from the comfort and familiarity of their home, which can ease anxiety and promote openness.
I approach therapy sessions by first building a trusting, supportive relationship where clients feel safe and respected. I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques, depending on the client’s needs. With CBT, I help clients identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies. With DBT, I incorporate skills like mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, especially when clients struggle with intense emotions or relationship dynamics. I believe in a collaborative, strengths-based approach that helps clients build insight, resilience, and long-term emotional well-being.
My advice to someone starting therapy for the first time is to be kind to yourself and give the process time. Try your best to come in with an open mind. Your therapist is there to support you, not judge you. Progress is possible, even if it feels slow at times, and remember that just showing up is already a step toward growth, increased self-awareness, and healing.
