Working with older adults brings a unique satisfaction. Through engaging in the process of cognitive and behavioral change, we can work together to achieve increased happiness/well being in a season of life that can be extremely challenging.

Online therapy is an extremely efficient method to engage in the process of therapeutic change. It allows clients to use their valuable time very wisely.

My approach to therapy sessions is to cooperatively work towards understanding current concerns and then identifying/replacing any unhelpful or unrealistic thoughts/beliefs/behaviors. I work cooperatively with clients with the overarching goals of changing what can be changed, accepting those things that cannot be changed, and applying cognitive and behavioral methods to maximize happiness/well-being.

Common issues I assist clients with include: assisting clients/caregivers to navigate significant life transitions (terminal illness, loss, grief, aging issues, cognitive decline/neuroplasticity/dementia, and various forms of medical concerns/decline, caregiving, successful aging, aging-in-place), and collaboratively addressing/treating various behavioral health diagnoses (grief, depression, anxiety, adjustment, etc).

For someone coming to therapy for the first time, my advice is to:

Approach therapy as they have approached other life domains wherein they have achieved success (education, hobbies, business, athletics, etc).

This would include working with the therapist to : A) clearly define their current concerns/problems, B) clearly define realistic/helpful goals and the skills/methods necessary to achieve those goals, and C) identify opportunities to actively engage in the skills/methods agreed upon in order to achieve those mutually identified goals.
