I find the work enjoyable because seniors present with real life problems. The issues they deal with are real time problems about their health, their family including both children and grandchildren, their relationships with partners and with friends, their work or retirement, as well as issues of loss and grief. And, they are survivors! They have a wealth of life time experiences that makes them quite interesting to work with and always engaging.
Online therapy is effective because it takes place in the comfort and safety of your own home. It is convenient so that you can access therapy on your computer or on your phone. For many seniors it is also a matter of convenience as they remain busy with appointments, responsibilities, and other commitments. Also for those of us who live in New England, it is much safer than driving to an office in the middle of a snow storm!
I joined Total Life as a provider and remain with them because I believe they offer seniors the opportunity to receive services that they might otherwise not be able to access.
I wanted to be a therapist since I first read Freud when I was in high school. He is the father of the “talking cure.” It worked for him then and it works for me now. I did not take a direct path to becoming a therapist because I first entered a Catholic seminary and later a monastery. After a couple of years I decided the religious life was not for me and that I still really wanted to be a therapist. I entered graduate school as an adult and eventually became a licensed psychologist when I was 40 years old.

I first started working with seniors when I was teaching in a master’s level program in gerontology. I had just graduated with my PhD and it was my first job teaching. It is now 30 years later and seniors remain an important part of my practice. I have worked with seniors in private practice, as well as in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. I have been with Total Life since the summer of 2022.
My approach? I do what works for the person with whom I work. We are all unique beings with our unique problems, but also our unique strengths. I try to identify each senior’s strengths as a way and a means through which to provide therapy. I also must say that I continue to believe what I was told by one of my mentors – it is the relationship that heals. I try to develop a healing relationship with each senior with whom I work.
