Getting to know Marsha
What do you enjoy most about working with older adults?
I enjoy working with older people because (1) I am one, (2) I appreciate hearing the life stories and how they have woven their experiences into meaning in their lives and (3) how they continue to want to discover their best selves in this life stage.
Why does online therapy work well for older adults?
I think online therapy is convenient and comfortable for older adults in that they can stay in the comfort of their own homes.
How do you approach therapy sessions?
The first step for me is to get to know who the client is. I ask them to tell me who they are. I give them the opportunity to ask me questions about myself if they feel the need/want to. After that and the biosocial assessment I ask them what it is that they want from therapy and what they want from life in general.
I assist client in identifying and challenging self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. I use Memory Reconsolidation Therapy for trauma and explain what this modality is and how it works. I do my best to make the relationship the most important thing.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
I was an undergraduate student in a completely different field and took a psychology class taught by a psychologist who had worked at Bellevue Hospital in NYC which treated homeless and marginalized people and told us endless stories about human suffering and recovery. After this class, I changed my major and it was a done deal.
What is your advice for someone starting therapy for the first time?
Go at your own pace, trust yourself and understand that it is a process not an event. Self-discovery is a lifelong process.
What do you wish people knew about therapy?
That the strongest indicator of success in therapy is the client's belief in the success of therapy.
Go at your own pace, trust yourself and understand that it is a process not an event.
I have an Airbnb glamping site in the woods and love to meet and greet my new guests and cook breakfast for them. This has been my favorite thing to do...that is, until my first granddaughter was born 8 weeks ago, and now my favorite thing to do is to hang out with her. I worked for the military for 15 years and travelled the world on assignments. I worked for the Native tribes in NM for 9 years and blended contemporary treatment with traditional Native practices which were provided by the Shamans.
