Q&A with Nancy
Getting to know Nancy
What do you enjoy most about working with older adults?
I enjoy the sharing that takes place with older adults. They appear open and authentic to me. I appreciate their wisdom and common sense. Also, I am older myself, so I feel that I can understand and relate well with my clients.
Why does online therapy work well for older adults?
Online therapy has proven to be as effective as in person therapy. The convenience of online therapy opens up more possibilities for them, as older adults do not have to worry about transportation. How wonderful to be able to have a therapy appointment in the comfort and privacy of your own home!
How do you approach therapy sessions?
I enjoy doing therapy, and in the twenty-six years I have been licensed, I have found that the best approach is to be warm, approachable, and authentic. I also feel that, when appropriate, humor is welcome in a session.
I choose the therapy modality that best suits the situation. That said, I try to provide a comfortable, open environment. I will admit that I am partial to EMDR-FT, because I have found it to be gentle and effective.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
I first got a Master's Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. That accomplished, I looked at the settings where I felt the most comfortable and effective, and realized that Clinical Psychology was the best fit. I find my work to be rewarding because I can offer hope to those who are needing it and ways to find healing for long-held woundedness.
What is your advice for someone starting therapy for the first time?
It is so wonderful that you are taking advantage of this opportunity to have therapy. I hope that you will feel welcome and comfortable in the Total Life setting, and that you will give therapy a chance to work for you.
What do you wish people knew about therapy?
Okay, I am biased, but I think therapy provides a safe environment to share your feelings about what is going on with your life. It also provides a warm, safe setting to discuss issues such as past hurts or trauma and find healing.
It is so wonderful that you are taking advantage of this opportunity to have therapy.
I love nature. I live in Arizona, and see quail, roadrunners, and cotton-tailed bunnies. I enjoy making succulent arrangements in pots, and have all sorts of cactus plants in my yard. A really good weekend day might include visiting a new area of Arizona with my husband, and enjoying a meal out together. I am even-tempered, but I love humor. I have four children and ten grandchildren, and try to keep informed about their activities. There also is the side of me that loves learning and I enjoy reading all kinds of books. My favorite volunteer activity is to work alongside my husband in the recovery field.
