Q&A with Jenny
Getting to know Jenny
What do you enjoy most about working with older adults?
I enjoy working with older adults and greatly appreciate their maturity, self-awareness, and knowledge.
Why does online therapy work well for older adults?
I believe that online therapy can be beneficial for older adults who face challenges in leaving their homes due to mobility limitations and various medical issues. These factors can significantly affect an older person's ability to access traditional therapy. Additionally, online therapy can assist those living on limited incomes, as transportation costs can further contribute to financial stress.
How do you approach therapy sessions?
I use a humanistic and solution-focused approach to therapy.
First, I focus on building rapport with my clients. Next, I gather a detailed history of their issues and review previous interventions to identify what has worked and what hasn’t. I also empower my clients to learn from their experiences, helping them maximize their independence as they age.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
From a young age, I have been passionate about helping those who are disenfranchised. During my teenage years, I had a wonderful role model in my family who introduced me to the needs of individuals with mental illness and guided me on how to support them best. He also encouraged me to get involved and make a difference for those in need.
What is your advice for someone starting therapy for the first time?
Support and reinforce their decision to seek help. I would explore what motivated them to seek help now and encourage them to recognize progress, no matter how small or slow it may be.
What do you wish people knew about therapy?
Therapy can empower individuals and help them become their best selves.
Support and reinforce their decision to seek help. I would explore what motivated them to seek help now and encourage them to recognize progress, no matter how small or slow it may be.
A couple of years ago, I embarked on a spiritual journey walking the "El Camino de Santiago" with friends. I walked 23 kilometers a day for six days. This experience is probably one of my proudest achievements in life, alongside the joy of having my children.
