Q&A with Lakeytha
Getting to know Lakeytha
What do you enjoy most about working with older adults?
I enjoy working with older adults because of the wisdom, resilience, and life experiences they bring into the therapeutic space. Supporting them through transitions such as retirement, grief, health changes, or identity shifts is deeply rewarding, as it allows me to help them find meaning, purpose, and peace in this stage of life.
I value the opportunity to provide a safe and supportive environment where older adults can process emotions, strengthen coping skills, and maintain dignity and connection, while also learning from the rich perspectives they share.
Why does online therapy work well for older adults?
I believe online therapy is effective for older adults because it removes barriers such as transportation, mobility limitations, and distance from care, making mental health support more accessible. It allows them to receive therapy from the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, which can help reduce anxiety and encourage openness.
Online therapy also provides flexibility, consistency, and privacy, enabling older adults to stay connected, supported, and empowered in their mental health journey.
How do you approach therapy sessions?
I approach therapy with older adults by creating a supportive space that honors their life experiences. I focus on helping them navigate challenges such as health changes, grief, and life transitions while building coping skills and resilience. My goal is to empower them to maintain independence, find meaning, and feel connected in this stage of life.
My approach is:
Collaborative and client-centered: I work alongside clients to set meaningful goals that reflect their values and priorities.
Strength-based: I highlight resilience, coping skills, and the wisdom they’ve already developed across their lifetime.
Evidence-based: I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and life review therapy to help manage anxiety, depression, grief, and adjustment concerns.
Holistic: I address not only emotional well-being but also the importance of maintaining social connections, independence, and a sense of purpose.
Ultimately, my goal is to support older adults in processing their experiences, finding meaning in this stage of life, and encouraging dignity, peace, and connectedness.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
I was inspired to become a therapist because I have always had a deep passion for helping people heal, grow, and feel whole. Over the years, I witnessed how life’s challenges—whether stress, trauma, loss, or transitions—can weigh heavily on people, and I felt called to walk alongside them in those moments.
Becoming a therapist allows me to provide support, tools, and encouragement so that clients can discover their strengths, overcome obstacles, and move toward a healthier and more fulfilling life.
What is your advice for someone starting therapy for the first time?
My advice to someone starting therapy for the first time is to give yourself permission to be open to the process and patient with yourself. Therapy is a safe space for you to share your thoughts and feelings without judgment, and it’s okay if it feels unfamiliar at first. Come as you are—there’s no “right” way to do therapy.
Building trust with your therapist takes time, and progress often happens in small steps. Be honest about your needs, ask questions, and remember that showing up is already a powerful step toward growth and healing.
What do you wish people knew about therapy?
I wish people knew that therapy isn’t just for times of crisis—it can also be a place for growth, self-discovery, and support through life’s transitions. Therapy is not about being “broken” or needing to be “fixed,” but about having a safe space to process your experiences, gain new perspectives, and develop tools to live more fully. It’s a collaborative process where you and your therapist work together at your own pace.
My advice to someone starting therapy for the first time is to give yourself permission to be open to the process and patient with yourself.
I recently walked up a mountain in Phoenix, AZ (totally new experience and out of my comfort zone!) I enjoy reading and I am a published author.
