I am an older adult and enjoy working with my peers. We are all living the latter part of our lives. Although our experiences are diverse and the challenges often difficult, it is really rewarding to assist an older person who is working through a life issue or seeking relief from emotional discomfort (depression, anxiety, grief, loneliness, financial problems, chronic pain, care giving, etc.)

Older adults appreciate gaining insights and tools to feel better. An online platform enables them to do so without having to leave home. For many older adults, having one less thing to do involving driving and navigating buildings is a plus. Also, use of the computer or phone is an esteem builder in a world full of inevitable losses (vision, hearing, balance) as we age.

My experience is that some people like to work with a workbook to get better, while others prefer to dialogue only, and still others do best with imaginal work or collage/draw projects. Sometimes it is difficult for a person to talk about the underlying issues without first finding the mode of relating that suits them. So the biggest detail of my experience is hanging in there to find out what is the key for communicating with my client so they can talk about their feelings. And then I have to find out how they would like things to be different. Then the change work begins.

I was trained as a Humanistic psychologist and a Cognitive Behavior therapist back in 1985. I also hold an MA in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. Today I would describe my approach as Cognitive Behavior (since it now includes mindfulness and imaginal work) and Interpersonal. My main premise still resides in the fundamental Humanistic Concept (Abraham Maslow): the individual has an inherent knowing of what would be right or in balance for them. My areas of expertise are Chemical Dependency, LGBTQ+, and Older Adults.
